Learn to Read Online

Starfall is a free website with some great online activities that helps in teaching children how to read. Although the site says it’s geared towards 1st graders, I believe it’s never too early to start. Pooky has definitely already shown interest in viewing moving images on the computer. While she’s too young to handle the mouse and keyboard, sites like these give us some time together learning as I navigate and read to her while she sits back and takes it in.
The Starfall website is broken into four sections depending on the reading level of the child: ABCs, Learn to Read, It’s Fun to Read, and I’m Reading. The reading instruction methodology is research-based and uses phonics and interesting stories to develop comprehension and reading ability. I also appreciate that the site uses diverse images of children.
