Do Not Harm My Children

I’m a non-violent person. Ever since becoming a mother, though, something was implanted in me that immediately triggers rage and violent thoughts when I think about the possibility of anyone purposefully harming Pooky. I feel now that, as a mother, I’m definitely capable of violence in situations where I have to defend my child. Of course, I hope I’m never in such a situation.

I can somewhat identify with this news story referenced at Blogging Baby and applaud the courage of the mother who did all she could to defend her daughter:

It was a nightmare scenario, but after the dust settled late Sunday night, an unnamed Georgia mom emerged both a victim and a hero. That evening an old friend from high school whose romantic overtures she’d spurned showed up at her house wearing a ski mask and wielding a shotgun. After beating and raping her, he threatened to do the same to her 6-year-old daughter, and that’s when the woman went for the butcher knife. They fought for as long as 20 minutes. She stabbed him, he stabbed her, smearing the floors, walls, and windows of her home with blood. At the end of the fight, 38-year-old Gerald A. Lee lay dead in the front yard, and the little girl was unharmed.

The mom also survived but in serious condition at the hospital.
