Spam is Making Me a Bad Parent
Posted by May on November 29th, 2006Filed under: Just Babbling, Parenthood.
I’ve been receiving a lot of spam lately. No, I don’t mean spam-in-a-can spam. I’m referring to spam-in-my-mailbox-everyday-and-I-hate-it spam. Although this doesn’t initially appear to have much to do with babies or parenting, I feel I can rant about it here because it’s really starting to take a lot of my time to go through all of it and delete them in order to get to the non-spam emails, which translates into valuable time that I could be spending with Pooky.
Yes, spam is turning me into a negligent parent.
The spam of the month, it seems, are these emails with subject lines like:
hi it’s Brian
hi it’s Lowe
hi it’s Rena
hi it’s Baxter
hi it’s Mack
hi it’s [insert name here]
you get the point.
The email content (does this even qualify as content?) always has something to do with stock tips. I receive them, delete them, walk away from my computer, come back, and they’re baaaaaaaack! Please, spam, go away!
According to a CNN article released the other day:
The number of “spam” messages has tripled since June and now accounts for as many as nine out of 10 e-mails sent worldwide, according to U.S. email security company Postini.
90% of emails. This has got to be illegal. Oh, wait, it is illegal. Apparently, it doesn’t matter. I’m going to try to find some anti-spam solutions because this is getting out of control, and this will mean yet more time that’s not being spent with Pooky.
ETA: It must be my lucky day! Right after I finished writing this, I checked Lifehacker and found that they just posted some article links to help combat spam. Haven’t read through them yet, but here they are.
