This month’s Pooky Prize (which, by the way, you can enter to win by signing up for the mailing list on the right), reminded me of how much I look forward to Pooky being out of diapers. If I needed another reminder, I got one yesterday when I had to deal with the world’s greatest poop explosion. While I have gotten over my fear of changing diapers, I wouldn’t say that I enjoy it. I’ll miss many things about this time when baby is no longer a baby, but I don’t think the diapers will be one of them.
The question, though, is how to go about easing her out of her Pampers Cruisers. Everyone I talk to seems to have an opinion. Here’s a nifty top-ten list of potty training tips at Thrifty Mommy (including #4, “Buy a potty doll”). My mom swears that she potty trained me in one day just by having me run around without pants or a diaper. Then there’s the growing movement in which parents eschew diapers altogether. While I don’t think I could commit to that, I admire these parents’ dedication and determination.
I’m sure it won’t be easy, however we do it. There’ll be plenty of accidents to deal with. Still, I can’t wait.
One book that I’ve read and recommend for parents and kids to read together on the topic is “Everyone Poops”, by Taro Gomi. Price: $12.95. You can get 20% off of it with code Googa20 at Exit9 (follow the link) if you order by December 31.
