Potty Training, I’m Ready for You

Potty Chair DollThis month’s Pooky Prize (which, by the way, you can enter to win by signing up for the mailing list on the right), reminded me of how much I look forward to Pooky being out of diapers. If I needed another reminder, I got one yesterday when I had to deal with the world’s greatest poop explosion. While I have gotten over my fear of changing diapers, I wouldn’t say that I enjoy it. I’ll miss many things about this time when baby is no longer a baby, but I don’t think the diapers will be one of them.

The question, though, is how to go about easing her out of her Pampers Cruisers. Everyone I talk to seems to have an opinion. Here’s a nifty top-ten list of potty training tips at Thrifty Mommy (including #4, “Buy a potty doll”). My mom swears that she potty trained me in one day just by having me run around without pants or a diaper. Then there’s the growing movement in which parents eschew diapers altogether. While I don’t think I could commit to that, I admire these parents’ dedication and determination.

I’m sure it won’t be easy, however we do it. There’ll be plenty of accidents to deal with. Still, I can’t wait.

Everyone PoopsOne book that I’ve read and recommend for parents and kids to read together on the topic is “Everyone Poops”, by Taro Gomi. Price: $12.95. You can get 20% off of it with code Googa20 at Exit9 (follow the link) if you order by December 31.

Karen’s DD is a little older than mine but we are facing the same dilemma. When to start KM’s potty training expedition. However, everyone tells me to make sure it is not a big deal. If she has to struggle with it, then she is not ready.

    Great site, by the way!

My DD is very strong-willed and high maintenance. Potty training was a big deal with her. If we would have waited until she was ready, then she would STILL be in diapers!!!!! I finally got her to commit to being potty trained when she turned 3. Sure enough, she started doing everything correctly the week she turned 3. Geez!!!

    Thanks for mentioning Thrifty Mommy!
