Dealing With a Picky Eater

We’ve recently introduced some baby food into Pooky’s diet, with mixed results. At first, she would make a horrible face any time the mashed sweet potatoes or carrots touched her tongue. And, since she insisted on holding the spoon, 99% of the food ended up on her face and her clothes, rather than in her [...]

Massage That Baby

I’m well aware of the fact that baby massage is beneficial to babies. What I hadn’t heard before, however, is that it can also directly benefit mothers (my emphasis added):
Gentle massage reduces the level of stress hormones in babies under a year old, helping them sleep better and cry less, a British study finds. But [...]

Doctors Should Use Google?!

I get a lot of information from the internet. If it’s not an emergency, I’ll look up health-related information online before going to my doctor and asking about it. The times that I’ve asked a doctor about a specific issue, I always found that I’m sitting there in the office listening to him tell me [...]

Don’t Forget to Read the Fine Print

Before Pooky was born we were told by a number of people to check our hospital bills carefully for errors. I’m really glad I took that advice to heart, because it saved us over $500. Our health insurance, which we have through my work, gives a discount for identifying billing errors made by the hospital. [...]

Give’em a Straw for their Meds

I haven’t figured out a great way to give Pooky medicine. The few times we’ve had to do this, she’s either 1. swallowed after a shocked expression on her face or 2. gagged on it with a shocked expression on her face and then thrown up. I’ve learned not to give her medicine right after [...]

Check Out those Eyes

Did you know that a baby’s eyes are about 75% the size of an adult’s? Their eyes are much larger in relation to their faces than adults’ eyes are. It’s part of what makes them so cute. Despite this fact, the eyes are woefully neglected when it comes to babies’ health. Well, a public health [...]

Get the Lead Out

I’ve often complained about living in one of those new, suburban, cookie-cutter houses. It’s just so depressingly generic. It has no history. There’s just nothing interesting about it. Still, it has its advantages. Upkeep is a breeze. And, according to a story from Portland NBC affiliate KGW, it may be better for my family’s health. [...]

Blow Away the Head Lice

I remember dealing with head lice as a kid. It was not fun, especially when you come from a family with 6 kids. When there was a head lice breakout, it was a pretty toxic scene - the infestation as well as the horrid smelling shampoo needed to get rid of it.
Someone in Utah [...]
